Ruth Sulik, our new presiding president introduced our guest lecturer. He is a man with quick hand, fast on his feet, and able to misdirect an audience with a few well-chosen words. No, she was not talking about President Clinton. She was introducing Dan Paulus, a mild manner family man, whose alternate identity is that of a super magician. The fantastic turn out for this lecture is a testimony to how highly regarded Dan is by the magic community.

Dan Paulus

Dan Paulus offered this lecture in appreciation for all the kindness and hard work that everyone put into the fund raiser for Dee Pollard at the Draper theater. As he put it, "IBM has truly shown what it means to be a Brotherhood. Thank you all." So in appreciation he offered to give a free lecture for all active members.

Dan started his lecture by performing Blind Luck. A spectator Benjamin Yang selects a deck of cards. He could choose between a deck that had a red back design, or one with a blue back design. After choosing one of them Ben reverses one card, sight unseen, into the middle of the deck. Dan spreads the two decks out. Ben's selected card was now visible to the audience. In addition, a prediction card was found turned over in the deck Ben did not chose. The two cards match perfectly. Still, what is more amazing is the back design on the two cards came from the other deck.

Blind Luck

Dan then shared with us a host of other tricks, the ‘Must do Traveling Aces,' ‘Easy Card to Pocket or Wallet,' ‘Count Down,' ‘The Impostors,' ‘Samurai Jokers,' and ‘Shout'. Each as stunning and visually effective as his opening trick ‘Blind Luck.' At this point in the lecture we took a break and had refreshments. Mike Cottam was kind enough to providing refreshments. Thank you, Mike.

Before the lecture started again, Ruth Sulik presented Anthony White with his IBM membership certificate, membership card, and pin. Congratulations Anthony. Ruth then turned the time back over to Dan.

 Imaginary Deck

During the break someone asked Dan about his Imaginary Deck Routine. So Dan started the second half of his lecture by performing it with a borrowed Mental Photography Deck. He then used four coins to do a Coins Across routine using a Mid Air Han Ping Chein move. Taking the same four coins, he did Four Coins - Four Shticks where each coin performed a different trick.

Dan shared a host of other effects using coins, such as the ‘Minty Fresh Coin in Bottle,' ‘Kennedy Conspiracy Bill,' and ‘Business Card Quiz Show'. In the ‘Minty Fresh Coin in Bottle' a borrowed quarter penetrates a sealed Tic-Tac mint box. In the ‘Kennedy Conspiracy Bill' a half dollar visually penetrates a dollar bill.

Business Card Quiz Show

However, ‘Business Card Quiz Show' required a contestant. Rebecca Nelson was selected as the contestant. Dan gave Rebecca a chance to win a prize if she could guess if a Chinese coin or a half dollar was in the middle of a folded business card. In consolation Dan gave Rebecca his business card.

We would like to thank Dan Paulus for sharing his time and talent with us.
Thank you, Dan.
