Day of Magic
|
On Saturday, August 19 we held our very first Day of
Magic at Kim Walkowskis cabin in Lambs Canyon. The
day started bright and early with our close-up contest at 8:00.
Congratulations to Jim Davis for winning first prize in the contest. |
 |
Following the close-up contest, we were pleased to have a lecture by
Dan Paulus. Dans lecture was excellent.

The best part of listening to Dan lecture is being able to enjoy
his great
sense of humor that has certainly contributed to his success as a
professional magician. Saturdays are generally a busy day for
professionals like Dan, and as such the club would like to officially
thank Dan for taking the afternoon off to support the club.

Following Dans lecture, we enjoyed a great lunch. Thanks to Harry
Schumann for preparing the food for the event.
|
After lunch, we had several mini-lectures by three of our local
members. Eric Wanner discussed invisible thread. Watching Eric
perform his version of Lite-Flite certainly qualifies him as an
expert with invisible thread. |

Following Eric, Kim Walkowski shared three of his effects with the
club: a jumbo card routine, the nightmare deck, and a
wallet prediction trick. Dan Paulus concluded our mini-lecture with a
discussion on false cuts and shuffles. |
|
 |
Our final lecturer was David Regal. It is truly amazing to see how
many strong and original effects David has created. Davids
magic is extremely diverse. He performed magic with cards, magic with
coins, magic with rings, and even some very impressive mentalism effects. |
 |
|
It would be impossible in the limited space of this newsletter to
adequately explain everything that David did for the group. Many of
the effects that David performed for the group are found in his book
Up Close & Personal. Some of the |
 |
tricks that David performed and lectured on included: the DeJa Vu,
Clearly Impossible, Pasteboard Massacre, There & Back, Heading
North, All Strung Out, Alls Fair, Self Evident, Leap of Faith,
the Worlds Fastest Card Trick, and The Flying Hole. |
Finally, a special thanks to Kim Walkowski for allowing the club
to use his cabin for the event.
Many of us have traveled to big, expensive magic conventions
around the country. It was a
rare privilege to be able to gather for an entire day of magic at
such a reasonable price and
within minutes of our homes here in Utah. Those of you who were
unable to attend truly missed
a great, magical opportunity.
Close-Up Contest
Congratulations to Jim Davis for winning first prize in our
close-up contest on our August 19 Day of Magic. We had a number of
people express interest in the competition, but when Saturday morning
arrived, only five people were brave enough to take on the challenge:
Mel Ota, Jim Davis, Eric Wanner, Paul Vigil, & Brad Gordon.
|
In keeping with his cowboy style, Jim Davis performed a
wonderfully original version of the cups & balls, which uses
leather cups and bullets. Thats right, bullets! I think the
judges may have been a bit concerned about what might happen to them
if Jim didnt get first place. |
 |
Mel Ota won second place with a money magic routine. Paul Vigil
took third place,
performing Aldo Columbinis Seventh Floor, a very
technically challenging effect.
Both Eric Wanner and Brad Gordon performed some excellent card
magic. The
scores were close, but only three winners could be selected.
A special thanks to Harry Schumann, Dan Paulus, and David Regal
for being the
contest judges. And a very special thanks to all of the
contestants for being brave
enough to perform for such an intimidating panel of judges.
